The city was known from Roman times as Hispalis. Hispalis developed into one of the great market and industrial centres of Hispania, while the nearby Roman city of Italica present-day Santiponce , birthplace of the Roman emperors Trajan and Hadrian  remained a typically Roman residential city. Large-scale Roman archaeological remains can be seen there and at the nearby town of Carmona as well. The walls surrounding the city were originally built during the rule of Julius Caesar , but their current course and design were the result of Moorish reconstructions.
Santa Cruz is particularly liberal in this respect. The sexism and machismo characteristic of Latin America is arguably less prevalent in Bolivia than in many other countries, but it can still present an annoyance for foreign women, particularly those travelling alone or accompanied only by other women.

From a traveller perspective, South America splits into roughly three regions. The more developed Southern countries of Argentina, Uruguay and Chile; with their European feel, political stability and relatively high standards not to mention great wine and meat. Here you have the main concentration of travellers, drawn not only by the world famous sights, but also the significantly lower cost of travel certainly in Bolivia.
And a more ‘authentic’ South American feeling with a great percentage of indigenous population highest in Bolivia and stereotypical scenery.

As such, the Roman Catholic Church receives support from the state and exercises a certain degree of political influence through the Bolivian Bishops’ Conference. Courses in Catholicism are offered in public schools, but students of other faiths are not required to attend. Non-Catholic organizations register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship for tax and legal benefits, but unregistered groups are not restricted from gathering. Freedom of religion is provided for in the constitution and this right is generally respected in practice.
There is a Mormon temple in Cochabamba which is believed to serve more than , Mormons from across the country. There is a small Jewish community with a synagogue in La Paz, as well as a Muslim community with a mosque in Santa Cruz. Korean immigrants also have a church in La Paz. Common traditional beliefs include a focus on Pachamama, who is a mother earth figure, and Akeko, a god of luck, harvests, and abundance.
They are the crown jewels of the Rocky Mountains and by far one of the most photographed scenes in the country. It is difficult to say when the timeless beauty of these two sentinels mirrored in the lake is more striking: In the summer, when every hiking trail takes you through fields of wild flowers, in the fall, when tall aspen trees dazzle with a rainbow of fall colors, or in the winter, when snow and ice silence the world.
The best photo opportunities are from one of the many hiking trails — access by motor vehicles is limited. Its sheer size is breathtaking and although you can see only a small portion of it even from the best vantage point, its geology and its age fire the imagination.

According to some sources, the red represents Bolivia’s brave soldiers, the yellow stands for the country’s mineral deposits, and the green for fertility. The coat of arms also includes an Andean condor. Bolivia is a land-locked country in the “heart” of South America.
It’s almost the same size as Egypt, or three times the state of Montana! There are five distinct types of geographical areas in Bolivia- Altiplano to the west, which is high, cold, and bordered by mountains; Las Yungas, a region of valleys; the central highlands, where much of the country’s agricultural efforts are located; a subtropical plain called Gran Chaco, which is shared with Argentina and Paraguay; and the tropical, forested lowlands called the llanos.

Deserts are sometimes defined as environments that receive less than an average of mm of rain in a year — the Atacama receives less than 1mm each year. As a result it is almost entirely without greenery, shade, cities or pollution. For landscape photographers — and idle dreamers — the setting is inspiring, with wind-sculpted canyons and salt lakes providing a backdrop that not only looks Martian but is actually used to test Mars rovers in simulations. Bounded by the Pacific Ocean — where the cold Humboldt Current prevents rain clouds from forming — and the Andes mountains, the 41, square-mile desert is part of a series of contiguous arid landscapes that includes salt flats, sandy deserts, rocky peaks and active volcanoes.
Though temperatures are moderate, ranging from 71F 22C by day to 28F -2C after dark, the Atacama remains an extreme environment. Only cactuses and tough grasses can survive in the desert, though bromeliads flourish in zones prone to fogs.
