Few captains have more experience fishing with live bait than Key West charter captain Robert Trosset, known far and wide simply as R.T.. When chasing species such as amberjack, blackfin tuna, dolphin, grouper, kingfish, mutton snapper and sailfish, Trosset first fills the livewells aboard his Yellowfin 34 center-console, Spindrift, with plenty of bait.
Jeff Fortin left and Brad Murphy lift the Boat fishermen in Buzzards Bay have been pulling the occasional to pound fish out of large schools of 24 to 36 inch bass. He asked Fortin if he should follow the fish, but Fortin declined, not fully knowing the size of the fish he was attached to. Fortin was fighting the fish on a size Shimano Saragosa spooled with pound test braided line attached to a pound-test leader with a uni-to-uni knot.
With the real possibility of being spooled or having the fish break the leader, Gould maneuvered the boat as it ran underneath another boat. Weeds covered the bass when it first came into view next to the boat, making it difficult to determine its full size. The fish had five full-size pogies and a half-digested mackerel in its stomach. When we got it into the boat, all we could do was stare at it. After a couple photos, they tried to revive the massive bass, but the fish was spent and rolled over.
Later that morning, it would weigh in at Fortin, who has joined the Striper Cup almost every year, said it was the first fish he ever weighed in for the tournament.

The first ten to fifteen miles the surf was murky and full of various sea grasses and algae making fishing marginal, at best. Thankfully fishing guide Jeff Wolda was on his way out and mentioned that the water was much clearer in the twenties. Sure enough, not only was the water clear down at Big Shell beach, but there was no weed to foul the fishing lines either.

Share this article Share So far, acid whey has been fed to cows, and an attempt at turning it into proteins that can be used in baby formula or body building supplements, has also been made. But the cows have developed stomach problems; and while cheese companies figured out how to turn its by-product, sweet whey, into infant formula, a similar process has yet to be invented for acid whey.
At the creek, aerators were used and fresh water was pumped to re-oxygenate the water, said Doug Miller, an ODNR law enforcement supervisor. The scale of the problem is daunting, and yogurt manufacturers, like New York’s own Chobani, is so desperate to get rid of the whey, they pay farmers to take it off their hands.
FISHING REPORT: 10/26 – 11/1 Hey Gulfsters and Happy Halloween week!! My runny nose is proof that, unfortunately, the red tide still exists. This week I observed dead fish and/or red tide conditions from Tierra Verde north to Indian Rocks Beach at least.
The Caroline returned with 18 ling cod and limits of rockfish for 13 anglers while fishing local waters. They have some limited room in the upcoming week. While there were a few kings caught here and there last week, salmon fishing remained somewhat slow according to Todd Fraser from Bayside Marine. One thing always stays the same for fishing in the Monterey Bay and that is, every year is different. Some are slow for certain species while other years are very productive.
It is looking to be one of those years for halibut a good one.

Rose Greulich, Pulaski NY Another successful dry fly fishermen There are many fish around in the lower stretches of the Main river system, with a few new arrivals entering the system on the higher tide days. With the low water conditions, the fish are holding in the deeper water pools – ideal conditions for the lower stretches of the Main river below Blackville – especially for dry fly anglers – but not as good for much of the upper river system except for the deep holding pools where fish have been holding up, such as Black Brook, Big Hole and a few others throughout the system.
Every season can be different with either too much low water or too much high water – sometimes this makes it not so great for good fishing and makes it almost impossible to have good producing pools for every possible condition. However, we have worked hard at this over the years – sometimes leasing pools for years and waiting for just the right conditions for them to be successful. With the higher water conditions over the last 10 or so seasons, we often wonder if some of our low water pools would ever work out as well as they did in the ’90s and early ‘s when low water conditions were the norm for quite a few seasons.
We have not had great fishing over the past few weeks by any means, but despite these conditions, we still managed to have access to pools with fish around and were lucky enough to consistantly catch fish throughout the entire season by making it worthwhile to continue having access to as many private pools as possible for almost every condition – good or bad. This coming week’s forecast looks like we will be receiving a good rainfall and this is really needed for the entire river system and the tributaries.
If we receive as much as forecast, it will be perfect timing to get our fall fishing season underway on the main river and it’s tributaries. With the lower water we have experienced throughout the summer there should be a great splash of fresh fish entering the system when the fresh water arrives. Every guide has their favourite pools and favourite rivers to fish each season. The weather forecast for this week is sure to make the guides happy – especially Gary Colford for the Cains and Darryl Tucker for the Renous.

A surprise partial skunking on a little mountain stream By Troutnut on July 31st, I had some nice fishing for pretty little westslope cutts the other night, but first I got mysteriously skunked on a couple stretches of the same stream that should have been really good. I don’t mind a couple hours of “fishing instead of catching,” but it is an interesting puzzle to be solved. I had an interesting experience yesterday evening July 31st fishing a very small stream on the east slope of the Cascades above 3, feet.
When I was there for the first time eight days earlier, I was catching a pretty little westslope cutt or five in every likely-looking pool and pocket. Yesterday, fishing adjacent reaches at the exact same time of day, under similar weather conditions, I saw no sign of any trout. Not so much as a fingerling nipped at my fly, and no shadows darted away when I waded into a pool.
